The
Master Gardener program began in 1973, developed by WSU extension
agents, in response to information
requests on gardening
and horticulture. The program was designed to supply volunteers
with education and certify them as Master Gardeners. In return the
volunteers are expected to donate hours of work and resources back
to their community. The program became very popular, and in Washington
State we now have 3,100 Master Gardener volunteers, donating 182,184
hours of work. Master Gardener programs are offered all over the
country, as well as in Canada and Europe.

Master Gardener's Demonstration Garden
The Okanogan County Master Gardeners created, designed and currently maintain a demonstration garden located at the Okanogan County Fair Grounds, south of the Horticulture Building. The Master Gardeners chose to create a drought tolerant (xeriscape) garden.. The garden was tested in the summer of 2003 when the fairgrounds lost access to water for weeks, all of the plants survived.
Next time you are at the fairgrounds, check out our garden! |
